Teaching Without Books or Photocopies

by Deborah Brooks, Lecturer in TESL, Peralta Colleges. I create the format/structure; my students create the content. This takes much less prep time AND students learn faster since all of the content is meaningful. For passive voice, I ask, “Have you ever been robbed?” For comparative adjectives, I ask them to compare each other, their houses, and their families. For verb tenses, we use questions or student-created game boards. Workshop participants will practice this method. We’ll learn to create the materials cooperatively during class time.  I’ll show how to teach many skills at different levels, but mostly I will share a new way of thinking about your lessons.

Time: 3-5pm
Location: B-4 Dwinelle Hall
