The East Asian Languages and Cultures Department is launching a new Korean Language and Culture major, which offers students the chance to combine advanced language training with in-depth study of Korea's cultural, literary and media history.
Chair of the Center for Korean Studies Professor Jinsoo An notes that UC Berkeley has been a pioneer in Korean Studies since 1943, when it became one of the first U.S. universities to offer Korean language instruction.
"Today, the program has grown into one of the most dynamic in the country, with five levels of language courses and a wide range of classes on Korean literature, film, media, and culture," said Professor An. "Each year, hundreds of students enroll—500–600 in language courses and another 200 in literature and culture courses—reflecting both the program’s academic excellence and the increasing global importance of Korea."
"For undergraduates, the Korean program offers the chance to master a critical world language, explore Korea’s rich artistic and cultural traditions, and connect with the global impact of Korean literature, K-pop, cinema, and the broader 'Korean Wave,'” he continued. "Whether students are interested in careers in business, media, international relations, or academia, the Korean major provides them with the skills, cultural insight, and global perspective to thrive in today’s interconnected world."
