Language & AI

The Berkeley Language Center supports, produces, and disseminates scholarship and resources focused on language and AI. From instructional materials to cross-disciplinary conferences to research articles, the BLC is proud to be a hub for work at the intersection of language, language learning/teaching, and artificial intelligence.

The Language & AI initiative stems from the potential impact of AI language tools for language, language learning, and language teaching. How can and should AI be applied in language-related research and teaching/learning? How can AI be leveraged to further the study/exploration of language/culture/humanities? What questions about language/culture/humanistic inquiry does AI encourage us to ask?

The goals of this initiative are to:

  • engage the Berkeley campus community in cross-disciplinary conversations around AI and language

  • produce and provide resources for (language) teachers on how to critically and meaningfully integrate AI tools into their classrooms

  • support, engage in, and disseminate research on the intersection of language, language education, and AI

This Language & AI Initiative has been supported by a US Department of Education International Research and Studies Program grant (2023-2026) as well as local support from the Townsend Center for the Humanities.
