On Friday, November 8th, the Department of Spanish and Portuguese will be hosting a free event for language and linguistics students. Consider attending!
Last year we heard from Juan Rosas in his capacity as Spanish Language Access Coordinator for the city of Long Beach. Juan will be coming back this year to share a bit about his new position (Senior Health Equity Educator) in addition to his trajectory from Linguistics student to a career in equity advocacy. Drawing from his personal life and professional experiences in local government and healthcare, he will discuss discriminatory language policies in the US and the communities pushing for language justice. The discussion will focus on Spanish-speaking and other language communities in the US. Attendees will learn about the intricacies of language access implementation and how insights from linguistics can be applied in these spaces.
The event will be available online this time. Come watch with others in Dwinelle 370 or attend the talk online from 2 - 3:30pm. See attached flyer or contact Dr. Jhonni Carr (jhonni@berkeley.edu) for more information.
