In early November, the halls of Dwinelle Hall had some special visitors: Five AP French students from Salesian High School, accompanied by their teacher and Associate Principal, Dr. William Heidenfeldt.

The high school students visited a French 1 class, taught by Dr. Daniel Hoffmann (Lecturer & Coordinator, First-Year French Language Program). While younger than the Berkeley students, the high school students have more experience with French, so they tutored their college peers in the day’s lesson.

In addition to covering the day’s material, all the students participated in a get-to-know-you activity, comparing their reasons for studying French and what they hope to do with French in the future. After class, the students continued the conversation with French-themed desserts and home-made brownies, courtesy of Dr. Heidenfeldt.

Many of the Salesian students aspire to attend Berkeley next year, so perhaps they'll be in one of Berkeley’s French classes very soon!

Much appreciation to Dr. Hoffmann and Dr. Heidenfeldt for their work in connecting high school language learning to college language learning!
