“It’s like a Battle”: How Discourses of Language and Technology Impact the Language Classroom
Emily Hellmich, Ph.D. Candidate
UC Berkeley School of Education
Monday, January 30, 2017
12 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. • B-4 Dwinelle Hall
In this talk, I discuss my dissertation research findings on language and technology within current efforts to globalize K-12 schools in the US. While second/foreign languages as well as technology are often placed at the heart of these efforts, little is known about their respective roles, the underlying discourses that drive these roles, and how these discourses interact in the classroom. Drawing on data from a widely distributed survey as well as a focal case study, I discuss the layered and at times conflicting discourses that school actors reproduced from an ecological perspective as well as highlight the implications of these discourses for language research, teaching, and learning.
