BWLP Professional Learning Series, 2016 – 2017

Teachers of World Languages, including teachers of English Learners and Heritage Languages, are invited to participate in the professional learning programs, Foundations of Effective Language Teaching 1, 2, or 3. The program will be offered on six Saturdays: September 24, October 22, December 3, 2016; and February 4, March 11, and April 29, 2017. All meetings are from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm at the Berkeley Language Center, B-40 Dwinelle Hall, on the UC Berkeley campus.

Foundations 1: World Languages and Common Core Literacy (no prerequisite)

You will do all this and more in our six-day Professional Development series as you learn and practice new techniques! You will leave with ideas, materials, and the confidence to use them on Monday morning. Plus you will have the opportunity to network with colleagues.

Foundations 2: Building Thematic Units for World Languages and Common Core Literacy (Foundations 1 required)
Theme for 2016-17: It’s a Woman’s World
*  Advocate for World Languages for the Common Core
*  Instruct in the target language using authentic resources
*  Create real-world, culturally relevant thematic units
*  Infuse tech tools to engage all students

In our five-day Professional Development series (April 29 is a bonus day), you will be able to

• Address the Common Core with a toolbox of literacy development strategies
• Guide instruction with essential questions and learning targets
• Use authentic resources, including video, text, and multimedia of all types
• Develop proficiency-based assessments: rubrics, formative, summative

Foundations 3: Extending Thematic Units for World Languages and Common Core Literacy (Foundations 2 required)
Theme for 2016-17: It’s a Woman’s World
*  Leverage advocacy for World Languages for the Common Core
*  Increase instruction in the target language using authentic resources
*  Embed real-world, culturally relevant resources in thematic units
*  Infuse diverse tech tools to engage all students
*  Expand leadership and presentation skills

The five-day Professional Development series will enable you to

• Augment your toolbox of Common Core literacy development strategies
• Guide instruction with essential questions and learning targets
• Incorporate authentic resources: video, text, and multimedia of all types
• Improve proficiency-based assessments: rubrics, formative, summative

The cost for each course is $350. Please make checks or money orders out to the UC Regents. We cannot accept credit cards.
Credit: 2 semester are available from Stanford University (home of the CWLP) for an additional cost of $92.

Since our programs are authorized by the State and Federal Governments, you may wish to request funds for Common Core professional development, or Title I (Disadvantaged Learners), Title II-Part A (Professional Development), or Title III (English Learners).

The application deadline is September 9, 2016, and payment is due by September 16, 2016.
