Change in the field of foreign languages is often imposed from the outside (national reports, grant-making agencies, area studies programs, etc.), leaving the foreign language teachers subjected to the whim of “outsiders” and to forces often beyond their control. The recent MLA Report on foreign languages differs: it comes from within the field, and it is up to the field to reflect upon it.
