The Ecology of the Foreign-Language Literature Classroom: Complexity Theory as a Model for Pedagogy

In recent years, complexity theory has been adapted from the natural and physical sciences as a sort of meta-theory for applied linguistics. The purpose of this presentation is to show how this theoretical model can be brought to bear in rethinking curriculum and teaching, for linking theory to practice, and for unifying constructivist, ecological and social semiotic frameworks of L2 teaching and learning. Importantly, complexity theory helps us make room in the curriculum for many of the “messy” realities of the classroom. The focus here is on the teaching of literature, perhaps the “messiest” of subjects in language education.
