BLC Director Claire Kramsch reflects on issues of language educational policy in the United States in advance of the national colloquium organized by the UC Consortium for Language Learning and Teaching in the opening article of the fall 2005 BLC Newsletter. Anthony Liddicoat opened the fall 2003 BLC newsletter with Teaching Languages for Intercultural Communication. His thought-provoking article is followed by reports from the Director (Claire Kramsch), the Associate Director (Mark Kaiser), and the Coordinator for BLC outreach (Sonia S’hiri). Lowry Martin (PhD Candidate, French) and Michael Chad Wellmon (PhD Candidate, German) contributed their Fellows’ Reports. A number of faculty members shared their impressions of conferences they had attended: Agnes Dimitriou, Claire Kramsch, Sonia S’hiri, and Clare You. Timothy McGovern (Professor of Spanish, UC Santa Barbara) reviewed a textbook for advanced grammar and composition in Spanish, co-written by Agnes Dimitriou, Juan A. Sempere Martínez, and Frances M. Sweeney.

For the spring 2003 BLC newsletter, Associate Director Mark Kaiser conducted an extensive interview with the creators of Berliner sehen, an immersive multimedia environment for language and culture studies, followed by his Notes. Associate Professor of French Richard Kern contributed an article on what Education Abroad teaches. Agnes Dimitriou (Lecturer, Spanish and Portuguese), Paige Daniel Ware (PhD candidate, Education), William Short (PhD candidate, Classics), Kristenn Templeman (PhD candidate, French), and Michael Chad Wellmon (PhD candidate, German) reported on their BLC Fellows’ projects. We had conference reports from Lynne Frame (Lecturer and Language Coordinator, German) and Ellen R. Langer (Lecturer, Slavic Languages and Literatures).

Professor June K. Phillips, Dean of Arts and Humanities, Weber State University, Utah, provoked readers with her lead article in the fall 2002 BLC newsletter, Reality Programming: Survivor, Big Brother, and the OPI. Notes from the Director (Claire Kramsch), the Associate Director (Mark Kaiser), and the Academic Coordinator (Jean Schultz, Lecturer, French) followed. Associate Professor and Japanese Language Coordinator Yoko Hasegawa contributed a detailed description of her department’s Japanese Language Program. Contributing BLC Fellows’ Reports were David Pettersen (PhD candidate, French), David Wacks (PhD candidate, Spanish and Portuguese), and Chantelle Warner (PhD candidate, German). Lecturer in Spanish Agnes Dimitriou contributed two reports on conferences she attended.
