Site Director
East Bay Foreign Language Project
20-30% Position

INTRODUCTION

The Site Director for Professional Development develops and coordinates, in collaboration with the Faculty Advisor and the CFLP Executive Director, all aspects of the East Bay Foreign Language Project (EBFLP), a state-funded outreach program to local schools. The Berkeley site is one of seven CFLP sites in the state. It is one component of the overarching California Subject Matter Project (CSMP) funded though the University of California Office of the President. This is an academic coordinator position at 30%; salary commensurate with experience based on an annual 100% range of $58 to $64K.

The Site Director coordinates and implements all the activities associated with the site including: 1) recruiting a Leadership Team composed of foreign language teachers from Alameda, Contra Costa, and Solano Counties; 2) coordinating the design and implementation of professional development programs that focus on enhancing participants’ content knowledge and pedagogical skills; 3) directing an outreach program targeted at “lower-performing” schools to enhance teachers’ content knowledge and pedagogical skills; 4) working with East Bay schools to encourage the development of heritage language programs, and participate in the CSMP Region 4 Coordinating Council.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director is responsible for programmatic development, in consultation with faculty advisors, of the outreach programs and of the Berkeley site of EBFLP. Duties related to this programmatic responsibility include the following: requisite publicity for programs and workshops and augmentation of applicant pool; selection of participants; creation of the themes and content of each institute; recruitment of speakers; and assessment of programs’ accomplishments and inadequacies.

Program Implementation (40%)

Once programs are developed, the Director is responsible for their implementation. This includes planning and participation, in consultation with the faculty advisor and a leadership team of teacher facilitators, in the outreach efforts. Institutes implemented on the UC Berkeley campus include a summer selectional institute. During and following implementation, the Director maintains communication with the Executive Director and Advisory Committee of the EBFLP. The Director also participates in semi-annual meetings of the EBFLP to assess the success of program implementation. Finally, the Director maintains communication with teacher-fellows in a series of follow-up sessions to appraise the progress of teaching development strategies.

Budget Development (10%)

The Director is responsible for annual budget requests that are reviewed and approved by the EBFLP Executive Director and Advisory Committee. The Director, in consultation with the faculty advisor and the Associate Director of the Berkeley Language Center, recommends budget expenditures. (Implementation of payroll, reconciliation of ledgers and setting up of funds, however, is undertaken by the MSO of the Berkeley Language Center.)

Public Relations (15%)

The Director is responsible for public relations with the media, the public schools, and university to further the EBFLP. This aspect of the position includes attendance at workshops, public fora, and other functions that are germane to the mission of the EBFLP.
