Language Learning Media

Instructional media (mostly audio and including a growing number of video recordings and multi-media) in more than 90 languages. Many items in this collection are textbook components adopted for first and second year, college-level language courses. Other collection items are supplementary materials such as lectures, plays, poetry and authentic materials for more advanced language students.

• UCB Students with passwords can use streaming audio on the BLC web site, Online Lessons . Other patrons may use some language tapes, audio, CDs, video (see room B33 staff for assistance).

Audio Archive of Linguistic Fieldwork

Archival sound recordings of native speakers participating in linguistic field work. This collection contains linguistic data, stories, songs/chants and other material in about 90 languages; mostly endangered or rare languages. The largest group of languages represented is the result of field work sponsored by the Survey of California and Other Indian Languages (UCB, Department of Linguistics). The BLC is currently working on improving preservation of and access to this collection. This project is supported with funding provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities, Preservation and Access Award, 2004. Browse the catalog here.

Audio Archive of UC Berkeley Lectures and Events

Archival sound recordings of selected University-sponsored lectures, poetry readings, public addresses and colloquia dating from the 1960s through the late 1990s; including many notable speakers and a wide range of topics. Some samples from this archive are available through a collaborative project with the Media Resource Center, Moffit Library. At present this archive continues to record and preserve campus lectures sponsored by the UC Berkeley Graduate Council and others.
