Trends in Language Enrollment/Trendy Languages

The Modern Language Association’s enrollment survey has been conducted since 1958, and the upcoming 2016 census will be the twenty-fourth. It is broadly acknowledged to be the standard measure of language interest in higher education. The data include all enrollments in languages other than English in all US post-secondary institutions. This talk will present the results of the most recent survey (2013) with a brief tour of the searchable database with detailed enrollment data, which is available online for researchers and the public. For the report based on the last survey and links to the database, see www.mla.org/enrollments_surveys.
