Workshop on pragmatics with Andrew Cohen, March 8, 2013

Learners’ Pragmatics: Divergence from the Norm

by Andrew Cohen, University of Minnesota.

The session will start with a brief introduction on just what L2 pragmatics is all about. Then we will look at divergence from L2 pragmatic norms. Participants will then be invited to do an exercise in pairs or small groups where they get to figure out for a series of vignettes what the cause for pragmatic failure could be. Background reading for the session consists of pages 76-89 from Ishihara, N. & Cohen, A. D. (2010). Teaching and learning pragmatics: Where language and culture meet.  The chapter deals with divergence from pragmatic norms. The workshop will deal with the final pages from that chapter (pp. 90-96), which will be supplied at the workshop.
