Teachers of World Languages and of English Language Learners are invited to participate in the professional learning programs, Foundations of Effective Language Teaching I and Foundations of Effective Language Teaching II. Applications are still being accepted by fax or by mail! The program will be offered on five Saturdays: September 29, October 20, December 1, January 26, and February 23 from 8:00 to 3:30 at the Berkeley Language Center, Dwinelle Hall, on the UC Berkeley campus. Applications should be sent ASAP to reserve a space and payment (or guarantee of payment) will be accepted until September 29.
Foundations I (no pre-requisite): Participants will:
· Learn about the California World Language Content Standards and how to use them in designing unit and daily lesson plans.
· Understand how to design instruction that incorporates culturally authentic resources and that connects students to language use in real-world settings.
· Build a toolbox of effective strategies that support positive student interaction in communication-based scenarios.
· Select a Concentration to learn strategies that specifically apply to the students you teach: World Languages, English Language Learners, or Heritage Language Learners.
Foundations II (pre-requisite: Foundations I): Participants will:
· Use the California World Language Content Standards to plan stage-appropriate communicative units and daily lessons.
· Select and incorporate culturally authentic film and other resources that develop linguistic and cultural competence.
· Learn strategies that actively engage diverse learners and build communication skills that lead to increased literacy.
· Select a Concentration to learn strategies that specifically apply to the students you teach: World Languages, English Language Learners, or Heritage Language Learners.
The cost for each course is $250* with a 10% discount if you previously participated in EBFLP.
